BASILICA OF ST. PAUL OUTSIDE THE WALLS
The Papal Basilica of St. Paul outside the Walls is one of Rome’s four ancient Papal, major basilicas and the second largest after S. Peter’s Basilica.
It is the most important monument in the area and gives the name to the district where BV Oly Hotel is located.
According to tradition the Basilica was built on the burial site of the Apostle Paul of Tarsus, who was persecuted by Emperor Nero after the great fire that devastated Rome in 64 A.D.
It was rebuilt by Pope Leone XII in 1825 after part of it had been destroyed by a fire.
